General Manager


Company Background

Our client is a high-growth commercial landscaping business based in Virginia with branches in multiple metro areas across the state. The company has seen strong growth over the past few years and has recently been backed by a private equity firm to fuel continued growth.

The Position

Our client is looking for a General Manager / President to be responsible for driving business growth, excellent quality of work, and strong financial results. The General Manager / President will own the P&L and manage a team of professionals. This is a highly visible role that will report directly to the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities

  • P&L management & administrative detail: The General Manager / President will manage the company and its administrative details, personnel, and resources, as needed, for the company to achieve its monthly, quarterly, and annual financial, operational, and safety performance measures.
  • New account sales & existing account renewals: Develop and maintain strong client relationships to drive new account sales and existing account renewals. Implement efficient and effective sales and marketing strategies in the company’s target market.
  • Safe, efficient, and quality delivery of commercial landscape operations: Ensure the safe, efficient, and quality delivery of commercial landscape operations to the company’s portfolio of contract commercial landscape accounts. Work with the Operation Manager to coordinate and manage client service teams comprised of crew team supervisors and crew team members. Inspire team members and drive efficiency and profitability, through solid business insight and strong leadership abilities.
  • Direct support of daily and weekly management processes: As the company’s senior leader, the President will be responsible for the weekly meeting cadence among the company’s senior managers, including but not limited to -- Weekly Sales & Accounts Meeting, Weekly President & Ops Manager Yard Walk, Weekly Vehicle & Equipment Meeting, Monthly Safety Meeting, Weekly Talent Acquisition & Organization Meeting, and Weekly Finance Meeting – in close coordination with the applicable managers and relevant staff, and support follow-ups resulting from various management meetings and decisions taken.
  • Recruit, hire, and train all senior managers (e.g., sales managers, account managers, and operations managers, etc.): In consultation with other applicable managers across the company, fill open positions, replace underperforming managers, and grow the organization over time to meet the company’s financial, operational, and safety performance measures. Identify staff needs and ensure proper recruiting, hiring, training, and termination of employees as necessary (including the completion of proper paperwork and verification). Ensure periodic performance reviews.

Qualifications and Candidate Background

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 7+ years of senior management experience (ideally General Manager, Branch Manager, or Location Manager at a commercial landscape services company)
  • Strong working knowledge of business accounting and P&L statements 
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, engineering, finance, horticulture, or related field required 
  • Broad knowledge of horticulture, landscaping equipment, project management, fleet vehicle management, and employee recruiting, hiring, training, and termination 
  • Excellent executive communication skills with high EQ and ability to persuade individuals of various seniorities across the organization 
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to analyze complex business situations and structure solutions and business cases 
  • Low ego and excellent relationship building skills
