Introducing: The Not So Private Equity Podcast!

by: Kay Francoeur

Did you know that ECA sponsors not one but TWO brilliant podcasts on all things ex-consulting and private equity?

We’re proud to announce the launch of the Not So Private Equity podcast, where ECA’s own Director Steven Haug chats with industry experts and leaders in private equity who have keen insights into the nuances of the PE world.

These conversations are as fun as they are informative, and for the first episode of NSPE we have the genuine pleasure of listening to Steven’s talk with Jeri Harman, Founder & Chairman of Avante Capital Partners. Jeri is an industry veteran with over 35 years’ experience in PE who has prioritized recruiting and retaining the best talent for her firm. Like we believe at ECA, Jeri’s philosophy is that a firm is only as good as the star performers powering it. For Jeri and Avante, this has meant not just finding brilliant talent but also taking diversity seriously – 80% of the Avante team are women, minorities, or both. The diverse set of experiences the Avante team bring to the table is just one value add that they offer, but it’s an important one: studies show that with a diverse team, there is more openness to ideas, better decision making, and ultimately better returns. Jeri’s take is frank and refreshing and made me excited to learn more about the work Avante has been doing.

Another thing I loved about this conversation is how well Jeri articulates the field of private equity as a whole. For anyone who might just be learning about PE and is ready to dive deeper, she provides a succinct overview of different types of PE funds and the strategies firms use to create value for companies.

Jeri also dissects the stigma that is often associated with PE and shows how, especially in the lower-middle market, PE’s reputation as a job-killer is way off the mark. In fact, without the infusion of capital and operational support that PE firms provide, many of the small businesses that are the backbone of the American economy would struggle and ultimately collapse, leaving thousands unemployed. Most company founders and leaders seek relationships with PE investors precisely because they care a lot about the businesses they’ve built and the employees who work with them – PE is a great option for many founders looking to retire, or for company leaders who need a chunk of capital to jumpstart innovation and take their business to the next level.

Tune in to NSPE on Spotify or Apple Podcasts to hear more about Jeri, Avante Capital’s vision, and the pivotal role that boards play in the PE milieu.

If you’re searching for more listening pleasure this weekend, we also recommend checking out our long-running podcast Beyond Consulting – the only podcast dedicated exclusively to navigating your career and life after management consulting – where we chat with new guests each week to understand the array of options former consultants have after they leave the profession.
